Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after a man was shot and killed by Edmonton police during a confrontation Tuesday afternoon.

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) said officers were called around 12:46 pm MST to the area of 97 Avenue and 163 Street following a report that a man had entered a residential yard and pointed a firearm at a resident before fleeing on foot.

Police say they later found a man matching the suspect’s description in an alley near 98 Avenue and 156 Street. According to EPS, a confrontation took place, and one officer fired their weapon.

The 36-year-old man was given first aid by police before being taken to the hospital by EMS. He was later pronounced dead.

No officers were injured.

Investigators say an object believed to be a firearm was found at the scene.

As per standard protocol in officer-involved shootings, EPS submitted a formal notification under Section 46.1 of the Police Act. The Director of Law Enforcement has since directed the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to take over the investigation.

Due to the ongoing nature of the probe, Edmonton police say they will not release further information.
