British Columbia’s first case of monkeypox has been detected in Vancouver, the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) confirmed Monday..The centre said it used laboratory testing to determine the case and is awaiting additional confirmation from the National Microbiology Laboratory..In May, several potential cases of monkeypox were investigated in BC, however all were later determined to be a false alarm..Despite the virus’ unsettling name and widespread spotlight on its case count, the BCCDC says its risk to the general public is “very low," adding the majority of cases have been identified in Europe, with Canada's infections caused by a West African clade, tending to cause “mild disease.”.First discovered in the 1950s among research monkeys, the first human case of monkeypox was recorded in Congo in 1970..At least 700 cases of infection have been found in non-endemic countries since May 2022, and the World Health Organization says the infection is related to smallpox, albeit with milder symptoms which include skin lesions, fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes, and joint and muscle pain.. Monkeypox .Spread from person to person contact with sores and items like bedding or towels containing the virus, monkeypox can also spread through respiratory droplets during prolonged, close, face-to-face contact with an infected person, according to the BCCDC, further noting that symptoms can be present from five to 21 days after exposure..The BCCDC reminds British Columbians a vaccine which “can be used to manage the spread of monkeypox and prevent serious illness” is available in Canada, however the centre further adds that “there is no need for the general public to get vaccinated” at this time, but rather public health teams will assess if vaccination is appropriate on a case by case basis..Last week Quebec began administering the Imvamune smallpox vaccine, manufactured by Danish company, Bavarian Nordic..The company announced May 30 it had signed new supply contracts with a number of undisclosed countries for its smallpox vaccine. Canada and the United States already had ongoing supply contracts with the company, which began supplying its smallpox vaccine for "sporadic cases" of monkeypox in recent years..“The current monkeypox outbreak continues to call for a swift and coordinated response from health authorities, and we are pleased to assist more countries with supply of vaccines while we continue our dialogues with other governments to make vaccines available as fast as possible to mitigate the situation,” said Paul Chaplin, president and CEO of Bavarian Nordic..As a result of the monkeypox outbreak and subsequent supply contracts, Bavarian Nordic raised its expectations for 2022's financial results to be between DKK 1,400 and 1,600 million from a previous DKK 1,300 and 1,500 million.
