Canada is increasing 2022 oil and gas exports incrementally by 300,000 barrels a day as a response to the supply shortages caused by the war in Ukraine, said Natural Resource Minister Jonathan Wilkinson..The move to grow Canadian exports is triggered by the European reliance on Russian resources, which many countries are trying to get away from as war strikes continue in Ukraine..After two days of meetings with the International Energy Agency in Paris, Wilkinson announced Thursday Canadian industry has the production and pipeline capacity to increase exports..“Canada wants to help our European friends and allies at a time of crisis,” said Wilkinson..As global importers struggle to find alternative sources to Russian oil and gas, Wilkinson said Canada needs to increase supply on the global market..The increase will amount to a 5% boost for Canada’s energy producers..Wilkinson was clear on addressing environmental concerns, saying the jump will not be at the expense of Canada’s climate goals..“Canada wants to help our European friends and allies at a time of crisis,” Wilkinson said..“But of course, we are looking to be sensitive to, and consistent with, the commitments we’ve made with respect to climate change,” said Wilkinson..“Climate change is not going away. It is an existential threat to the world..“We can be part of actually helping them in the short term and we can be part of actually helping them to accelerate the transition to a green future where we all want and need to go.”.Wilkinson said Canada’s energy supply will only replace Kremlin oil instead of increasing the world’s gas consumption..US President Joe Biden agreed to similar circumstances in a new deal with the EU Friday..The US will increase transatlantic gas deliveries to deter European need for Russian resources..After the agreement was reached, Biden spoke in Brussels saying Vladimir Putin has exploited Russia’s status as Europe’s main supplier of gas to “coerce and manipulate his neighbors” and oil and gas sales with Russia “drive his war machine,” reported the Guardian..Ewa Sudyk is a reporter with the Western Standard.,.esudyk@westernstandardonline.com
