RCMP in Richmond have launched a crackdown on facilities that hold illegal karaoke gatherings.

Last weekend, officers raided two of the parties and handed out thousands of dollars in fines.

“At approximately 1 a.m. on Saturday, February 13, frontline officers attended a karaoke bar near the Aberdeen Square mall. Officers observed numerous contraventions of the Provincial Protective Measures Order,” RCMP said in a release.

“In all, 34 staff and patrons received violation tickets for $230 each, while the manager received a ticket for $2,300.

About 24 hours, police raided another bar where illegal singing was going on.

“At approximately 2 a.m. on Sunday, February 14, officers attended a commercial premises in the 2600-block of Shell Road. Upon arrival, police overheard people singing karaoke and discovered what appeared to be an unlicensed drinking establishment,” they said.

“In all, 21 participants received tickets worth $230 each for contraventions of the Provincial Protective Measures Order.  The organizer on-scene also received a ticket for $2,300.

Under BC pandemic laws, it is illegal to sing in public.

“Richmond RCMP is committed to promoting safety in our community, and we will continue to enforce the regulations aimed at slowing the spread of Covid-19,” said Cpl. Ian Henderson.

“It’s quite clear that some people are still not getting the message.  People who continue to engage in this type of reckless, irresponsible behaviour will be held to account.”
