The RCMP have laid terrorism charges against a Calgary man who is alleged to have spent a year in Syria training with ISIS..In a news release, the RCMP said Hussein Sobhe Borhot, 34, has been charged with three counts of participating in the activity of a terrorist group and one count of committing an offence on behalf of a terrorist group..RCMP claim Borhot was in Syria between May, 2013, and June, 2014, where he joined the Islamic State group and received training..He is also alleged to have participated in a kidnapping.. MRU prof vows to battle the ‘woke’ culture trying to take her downThis image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Join-WS-popup-300x300.jpg .The charges follow a seven-year investigation by the RCMP’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team, (INSET) the force’s specialized terrorism unit..Stewart Bell, of Global News, reported that ISIS files smuggled out of Syria show that a Canadian with a similar name and age had enlisted as a fighter. He provided a Calgary phone number..“I installed pipe,” read his ISIS form. It identified him as Hussein Baraat, and Abu Othman Al-Libani, a Lebanese-Canadian..Global also spoke with Prof. Amarnath Amarasingam, a Queen’s University terrorism expert, who had known about Borhot..“I’ve known about Hussein Borhot for a long time, and it was indeed surprising that he had not been charged,” Amarasingam told Global..“But, from all my interviews in Calgary, it did seem like he had turned his life around and had moved on with his life. And it is worth pointing out that there’s no evidence as of yet that he was doing anything to endanger public safety in the years after he returned.“The arrest shows that the RCMP is very much interested in charging returnees, even if it takes many many years to build a case. But, sadly, it may also suggest to some cynics that taking this long to build a case is exactly the problem, as someone more dangerous could have had a lot of time to plan some sort of attack back in Canada.”.The RCMP said Borhot is in custody and will appear in court in Calgary on Friday..“Canada is not immune to terrorist threats, and INSETs are key players defending Canada’s national security,” said Supt. Stacey Talbot, officer-in-Charge of “K” division INSET, in a statement released Wednesday..“Through an integrated law enforcement approach, the RCMP and its partners are in a better position to prevent, detect, deny and respond to threats to Canada’s national security.”.—More to come.Dave Naylor is the News Editor of the Western Standard.dnaylor@westernstandardonline.com.Twitter.com/nobby7694
