Premier Jason Kenney pleaded with the government’s public service’s employees to work with him as he tries to balance the provincial budget..Kenney made the plea Saturday night at the United Conservative Party annual general meeting in Calgary..Only hours earlier, a crowd that police said numbered 600, circled the Westin Airport Calgary, after government letters leaked Friday showed they were planning for at least 6,400 job cuts..“Albertans respect the work that you do – as does this government,” Kenney told delegates..“We want to empower you to create a high performing government that delivers services more efficiently, reducing internal red tape, empowering front line workers. We also want to challenge you to help us find reasonable savings in what in what is the biggest and best paid public sector in Canada.”.“Now the NDP and their special interest allies want Albertans to believe that our path to balance is, to use their words, reckless and cruel.”.Kenney reminded the crowd of an old Ralph Klein quote: “If a day goes by without a protest I wonder what I’m doing wrong.”.Kenney – who received numerous standing ovations – also bragged about the recent passage of the controversial Bill 22.. We did what the sceptics said was impossible,” Kenney said..And he told delegates he would be bringing up Alberta’s desire for changes in Confederation that would see the province treated more fairly..“I can tell you that I will be bringing your message directly to the Council of the Federation with all of Canada’s premiers (Sunday night) in Toronto and to Prime Minister Trudeau when I meet with him in Ottawa ten days from now,” Kenney said..“Come hell or high water, Alberta will get a fair deal,” Kenney thundered to a standing ovation..Kenney also touched some of his favourite topics – like blasting the NDP and extreme climate change activists and Ottawa’s unfavourable treatment of Alberta..Kenney was introduced to the crowd by Laureen Harper, wife of former prime minister Stephen Harper..The convention wraps up Sunday with Kenney answering delegates questions in a bear pit session..dnaylor@westernstandardonline.com.Twitter: @Nobby7694
