Disturbing posts penned by Liberal candidate for Haliburton–Kawartha Lakes Nell Thomas, 59, about the elderly, the environment and abortion have resurfaced on social media.
Thomas’s posts, dated 2023, 2024 and even some as recent as March of 2025, have resurfaced the weekend before the April 28 federal election, where polls show a tight race between the Liberals and the Conservatives.
The series of controversial posts include statements that criticize healthcare systems for “keeping ancients alive so long,” declaring “Agriculture, as known, is a thing of the past,” and a cacophony of remarks on borders, the carbon tax and abortion.
“Imagine my thoughts when assessing a pregnant patient. I telepathically advise the fetus to sue the owner of the uterus while exiting it to this world. Of necessity, a mother must be a climate change denier,” wrote Thomas.
“You must understand eliminating meat from diet is well well well (!!!) recognized as essential – and soon nonnegotiable – if any parts of the earth are to remain habitable.”
"Carney will have to bring us back to the wisdom of carbon tax, one way or another inevitably."
"There should be no borders."
"This (eating crickets) is exactly what the people who want to survive are doing. Wake up, PP. around the world, high-tech solutions to imminent starvation globally is to create indoor and underground and alternative food sources."
"Can't think of anything worse then jesus in my heart or brain."
"There is nothing more mind manipulating than religious doctrine."
Thomas, a medical doctor and former clinical speech pathologist, in response to the backlash complained the posts were “taken out of context.”
“This week, negative messages have been circulating on social media. Some comments that I made in the past are being shared and taken out of context,” said Thomas in a video she shared on Facebook over the weekend.
“However, I recognize that regardless of context, some of my words may have hurt people, and for that, I am truly sorry.”
“I want to be clear — my values remain rooted in respect and understanding and justice, and I appreciate this opportunity to clarify my views and reaffirm my commitment to building a positive environment for those who know me.”
“They know I am a person of strong morality. I am a physician who cares for patients of all ages across every stage of life, including end-of-life journeys. I help people find dignity … and seek peace when existence becomes too heavy to bear.”
“I am also a lifelong environmentalist who cares deeply about the future we are leading for our children.”
However, Thomas goes on to double-down on her comments about the environment.
“I would take legal action against the oil and gas companies that knew many decades ago, 100 years ago, the price we would eventually pay for our dependence on fossil fuels,” she said.
