Manitobans will likely have to endure tough COVID-19 vaccines mandates now in place until spring, says the province’s chief doctor.
“We have to expect that this would carry us through the typical respiratory virus season. So, through winter into spring,” said Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin on Monday.
“Obviously we review all these things all the time, but I think the given the state of our health-care system and the demands that the respiratory virus season will be likely to put on it, it’s very likely [it will] have to take us through this winter.”
Since September 3, proof of vaccination is required to gain access to businesses and services venues deemed non-essential. They include restaurants, gyms, movie theatres, casinos, nightclubs, museums, galleries, food courts and indoor and outdoor ticketed sporting events and concerts.
There are no restrictions on gatherings at private residences, indoor or outdoor, if everyone in attendance is vaccinated. If not, private indoor gatherings are restricted to two households and 10 people, excluding members of the household.
Over the past three weeks, tens of thousands of people attended football and hockey games, and concerts.
“We have not been able to tie any transmission to those events,” Roussin said.
“There’s some complexity with linking up cases when you have that many people at an event, but we certainly haven’t seen any significant transmission there.”
Over the past three days there was one reported COVID-19 death, a woman in her 50s, and 247 new infections. Of these, 90 people have been hospitalized, with 16 of them in intensive care.
