The Ontario NDP revealed how its pharmacare plan will work if it wins the next provincial election. .“Pharmacare is health care, and you shouldn’t have to rack up credit card charges to get the medicine you need,” said Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath in a Wednesday press release. .“With pharmacare, you’ll get the medicine you need with your OHIP card, not your credit card.”.The press release said the NDP’s pharmacare plan will help families save $350 per year. People who need take-home cancer drugs will save thousands of dollars per year, said the press release. .If elected, the NDP said it will make PrEP, birth control, and take-home cancer drugs free on Day 1. It said it will begin implementing Canada’s first provincial pharmacare plan soon after. .According to the press release, the NDP will start its pharmacare with universal drug coverage of 125 essential medicines, which represents about 80% of prescription drugs in Ontario. Coverage will expand to more drugs as time goes by. .Under the NDP’s plan, no person will pay for any deductible or premium for prescription drugs. The plan will be administered by the Ontario Public Drug Program Division of the Ontario Ministry of Health. .The press release said pharmacare will have a co-payment geared to income.
