The Democracy Fund’s (TDF) legal team has succeeded in preventing 17 clients from paying a total of $1 million in fines from COVID-19 tickets, according to a Thursday press release. .The release said TDF has helped 14 clients in British Columbia avoid paying more than $56,000 in fines in the last two weeks. .TDF’s lawyers have secured the withdrawal of three tickets in Ontario issued to business owners who faced fines totalling $950,000 for non-compliance with the Quarantine Act and the Reopening Ontario Act. .The release said many clients are unable to pay fines or would be forced to close their businesses if convicted. .TDF lawyer Adam Blake-Gallipeau said the organization will continue to “vigorously defend” its clients when there are suspected breaches under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. .TDF announced on Monday it succeeded in having multiple charges suspended for a Freedom Convoy protestor who faced up to 45 days in jail if convicted. .READ MORE: Charges stayed for Freedom Convoy supporter facing jail time.“TDF recognized that he had a strong case,” said Blake-Gallipeau. .“As with all our clients, we compelled the Crown to meet its onus."
