The majority of political party annual general meetings are normally as exciting as sawdust..But this weekend’s United Conservative Party’s AGM could be an exception..Mired in 20% in the polls and with a leader that ranks as the most unpopular in Canada, UCP delegates will certainly have lots to talk about..The event, being held at the Grey Eagle Casino on the southwestern outskirt of Calgary, kicks off with opening ceremonies at 5 p.m..Protesters are expected to be at the gates of the casino to protest UCP policies..Delegates will then debate governance issues, with plenty on their plates..There is a motion calling for leadership reviews to happen when 29 ridings demand it, up from the current 22..Just this week rebel ridings announced they’d reached the required threshold for such a meeting to take place..There’s also a motion to only allow Alberta Premier Jason Kenney to put forward motions at the weekend’s AGM. It is already being met with some anger from the grassroots of the party..A motion for the weekend’s convention states: “No resolutions other than the Special Resolutions and Resolutions approved by the Board will be considered, with the exception of those proposed by the leader.”.Calgary-Fish Creek UCP riding president Jack Redekop called the motion “unprecedented.”.“The grassroots will be discouraged at the prohibition put on them,” said Redekop at a virtual press conference on Monday morning, called after the number of ridings needed to force a leadership vote on Kenney reached the threshold of 22..“All CA presidents … they will be speaking out and their voices will be heard.”.Central Peace-Notley UCP riding president Samantha Steinke said they “will not stand for this procedure..“We will be able to combat anything that comes forward,” Steinke said..On Saturday, Kenney will face the delegates and deliver a keynote address..Our site, westernstandardonline.com will have coverage all weekend..Dave Naylor is the News Editor of the Western Standard.,dnaylor@westernstandardonline.com,.Twitter.com/nobby7694
