The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) placed students on the highest spot of its organizational chart. .“We found that responsible, service-based leadership does not require a hierarchy,” said WRDSB director of education Jeewan Chanicka in a Thursday video. .“It requires relationships and collaboration.” .Chanicka said the new organizational chart allows people “to think about how we come together at all levels to support one another in achieving the directions as they’ve been set out through broad community, staff, student, and family consultations.” .He went on to say to lead is to serve. He added the new hierarchy removes the direction of education from the top and places students at the top. .The director of education said service-based leadership means each layer is an additional area for support, starting from the bottom up. Each circle of support can connect and overlap as needed. .“People can support across the organization with the ultimate goal of serving students in the best possible way,” he said. .This latest instance of wokeness with the WRDSB comes after the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) took legal action against the school board on behalf of former teacher Carolyn Burjoski in June. .READ MORE: Justice Centre files lawsuit against Ontario school board for expelling teacher.“Ms. Burjoski is a former teacher with sincere concerns about the appropriateness of the sexual content being shared with elementary school-aged children in Waterloo Region schools,” said JCCF lawyer Jorge Pineda. .“The board’s decision to silence her not only deprives her of her right to freedom of expression under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but also deprives the public of hearing an informed dissenting voice on an issue that affects their children.”
