The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) released footage of a vicious beating that took place last weekend, leaving a defenseless man injured in Emery Barnes Park located in downtown Vancouver.
The video shows a large group watching and filming as two men kick and punch the individual while he is down.
“While this video is troubling to watch, we have had considerable success in identifying suspects in stranger attacks, and we hope that by releasing this video someone will come forward with information that can help us identify the people responsible,” said Const. Tania Visintin, VPD.
The beating happened around 11:30 p.m. February 20 and officers were able to locate and arrest one of the two suspects in short order, a 19-year-old man from Richmond. Police have released him from custody while investigators collect more evidence.
Police say the victim was later found by officers at him home after someone called 911 on his behalf. The 44-year-old man suffered facial injuries and required hospitalization.
VPD is working on identifying the second suspect, specifically a man in his twenties, about 5-ft. 9-ins., 160 lbs who was wearing a red hoodie, black pants, black running shoes, and carrying a black satchel.
“There must be people who either saw this swarming, were there when it happened, or recognize the people in the video. We’re asking those people to do the right thing and come forward,” said Visintin.
Stranger attacks and group beatings are not uncommon around Vancouver’s nightlife scene.
