Canada is beginning to eerily resemble the regimes that rule Iran, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. Canada’s federal and provincial governments have torn up ancient liberties not in the name of any god, but certainly in the name of a higher power that is beyond question. It is a system of government that resembles theocracy..If you don’t believe me, turn on your favorite screen, observe the warnings on public or private doors and eavesdrop on the muffled, masked conversations that your neighbours are having – all of life has been submitted to the will of the Great Rona, and our provincial health officers are the virus’ holy prophets..It’s a kind of technocratic theocracy. Whatever you might think of the Middle Ages in Europe, or even the brutal regimes of the present, from calls to prayer to their buildings of worship they’ve added some beauty to our collective history. But when your deity is a virus and your religion is its process, only ugly things result. Lead stain glass pollutes far less than disposable masks..Doubters are welcome to accuse me of hyperbole — but I’m from British Columbia, where our own high priestess, Dr. Bonnie Henry, has bound and loosed many an ordinance with a wave of her hand. The best example comes from near Boxing Day 2020; suddenly, people were allowed to visit older relatives, as if by the good doctor’s words, Rona couldn’t wander the earth that morn. We used to call these “holy days.”.We must understand that within a theocratic country – a land ruled by a state where a single idea pervades all decision making and culture – reality itself can become warped. Costco and Walmart — which serve thousands a day — can remain open, but churches or houses of worship, which serve only a few hundred once a week, must be closed, even sequestered by chaining the doors shut or building fences..Witness Alberta Premier Jason Kenney’s raid and barricading of GraceLife Church, and his jailing of its pastor..Witness Quebec, which locks people in their homes after 8 p.m., requires masks outdoors, and even makes it illegal for couples living in different homes from, well, you know..In the Holy Covid Church’s Quebec diocese, even most premarital sex is illegal..Time also becomes an illusion, something that can be manipulated at will by any official — elected or not — so long as they have the blessing of the Holy Covid Church. Thus, Alberta and Ontario have gone back to year zero week zero as if we’ve learned nothing from the last 12 months. In 2019, that would have been an admission of culpability and failure. But the white coats absolve our leaders and shame their critics..There is no salvation outside of the Technocratic Church. Even reasonable precautions are null and void – be sure to wash your hands, perhaps avoid hugging your grandparents. From sea to sea to sea, the unelected bureaucrats who have become our new priestly class declare there is only one path towards salvation: A rushed set of vaccines. Yet even with these, masks and distancing must continue..No alternative narrative can be tolerated, the smallest resistance must be crushed. People exercising what the constitution lists as a fundamental right are hauled away by men with guns. This is not a free and democratic society any longer. And say what you will about the old tyrannies, at least that ethos gave us new art, music, and architecture that still inspire..Our current ethos is a cult of death..This was predicted long ago by us traditionalists that get called all sorts of names and ‘isms’ on a regular basis. I assert man is far more a religious creature than a political animal and if that desire for the eternal is left to direct itself, he will find a new god to worship..Consider what our vices do to us. What monstrosities would be we become if our loftiest aspirations were twisted towards the infernal?.I’ll leave the preaching there, but if nothing else those of us living under yet another harsh lock down need to think about our situation differently. Facts and logic are no match for religious zealotry and superstition. Our only chance against our inquisitors is to prove that they are the real heretics..Nathan Giede is the BC Political Columnist and the host of Mountain Standard Time for the Western Standard
