NDP leader Naheed Nenshi won't rule out running in Rachel Notley's Edmonton-Strathcona seat, which becomes vacant at the end of the month.

Nenshi scored a political victory recently when the Alberta NDP reclaimed the Lethbridge-West seat. The byelection was seen by some as a test of his popularity outside urban areas.

"There is a vacancy, so I understand that the folks in Edmonton-Strathcona will be setting a nomination date soon," said Nenshi, who continues to scrutinize the UCP over health, education, federal relations and coal mining — among myriad other issues.

"Ultimately, the members of Edmonton-Strathcona will choose their nominee, but I'm looking forward to having conversations with them early in the new year."

Nenshi, former mayor of Calgary, won the NDP's leadership in June.

Mount Royal University political scientist Lori Williams told CityNews there is some probability Nenshi could run in Notley's Edmonton seat.

“He has said he would like to run for a seat in Calgary or Edmonton, and despite the rivalry between the two cities it might make some sense for him to run for (in) Rachel Notley’s vacant seat in a byelection,” Williams said.

“Because that would give him a connection to Edmonton as well as to Calgary.”
