Prime Minister Mark Carney is brushing off Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s recent comments suggesting the province may consider a referendum on independence.Speaking to reporters at the Canadian Embassy in Washington DC, Carney said he believes most Albertans want to remain in Canada.“As an Albertan, I know which way I would vote,” said Carney, without elaborating.Premier Smith raised the possibility of a future vote after growing frustrations over federal environmental regulations and what she called Ottawa’s “continued disrespect” for Alberta’s resource sector..Carney did not directly criticize Smith but urged leaders to focus on solutions within Confederation.“We need to work together. Canada is stronger when all provinces have a voice and pull in the same direction,” said Carney, a few days ago.The prime minister added that his government remains committed to addressing Western concerns but won’t be drawn into “divisive debates.”Smith has not formally proposed a referendum.
