The City of Edmonton said it and Valley Line West LRT contractor Marigold Infrastructure Partners (MIP) have achieved a major project milestone by reopening Stony Plain Road between 129 and 139 Street and the new bridge over Groat Road.On Saturday, the City of Edmonton confirmed Stony Plain Road and its bridge reopened to vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians. It said the Stony Plain Road Bridge was reconstructed to accommodate LRT tracks in the middle, one lane of vehicle traffic in each direction, and one shared-use path. “Reopening this section of Stony Plain Road marks a significant milestone in the Valley Line West LRT extension to Lewis Farms,” said City of Edmonton Director, Valley Line LRT Brian Latte in a Monday press release. “This section of road is a major transportation corridor into downtown, and Marigold made good progress in 2024 to reopen the bridge on schedule.”MIP construction manager Jonathan Cox said this “isn’t just a project achievement; it’s a significant milestone for the community.”“We recognize the impact construction has had on area residents and businesses, and we’re glad to be able to give them the road back,” said Cox. “We closed the bridge in December 2022 with a commitment to reopen at the end of November 2024, and we’ve fulfilled that commitment.” As MIP moves into 2025, Cox said it looks forward to celebrating the completion of other major milestones. “We appreciate the patience from Edmontonians while we complete one of the city’s largest infrastructure projects,” he said. The City of Edmonton went on to say Stony Plain Road between 129 and 139 Street has been permanently reduced to one traffic lane in each direction. It added most intersections will be permanently right in/right out. However, it said vehicle access across Stony Plain Road is maintained at 134 Street. It noted 132 Street will reopen in mid-December. Left turns from Stony Plain Road onto these streets will be prohibited. This is consistent with the permanent design where drivers must make three right turns to cross those intersections. Pedestrian access across Stony Plain Road is maintained at 132, 134, 136, and 138 Street. Meanwhile, pedestrian access has reopened on the north and south sides of Stony Plain Road and across Stony Plain Road Bridge. North and south pedestrian access at 135, 137, and 139 Street has permanently closed. The City of Edmonton continued by saying work on the Overhead Catenary System, permanent streetlights, and the utility complex in the area is ongoing. It said intermittent lane closures for short time periods will take place to complete this work. People will continue to be notified of any construction impacts. The Edmonton Transit Service will maintain current detours due to the ongoing work along the corridor.Valley Line West construction is anticipated to be complete in 2028 followed by an extensive testing and commissioning phase to ensure safety and reliability before it opens. The duration of the testing and commissioning phase is unknown at this time. The City of Edmonton concluded by saying Valley Line West is a transformational project that will change how people move and grow into a city of two million people in the coming decades. This ordeal comes after the City of Edmonton said in September its contractor PCL will be performing planned LRT track rehabilitation work on various dates. .City of Edmonton says 95 St. to close for LRT track rehabilitation work .It said this work will result in the closure of 95 Street between 105 and 106 Avenue. However, it said local traffic access will be available from 103A Ave. to 105 Avenue and 106 Avenue to 107A Avenue. It confirmed 95 Street will close from Friday at 7 p.m. to Monday at 4 a.m. on the affected weekends to replace tracks. It added the shared-use path adjacent to the work area will remain open during the closure, and flaggers will be present to assist walkers and cyclists through the area.
