'CRITICAL': Smith calls for election after Trudeau resignation
"It is one of the most irresponsible and selfish acts of a government in Canadian history."
These are the words of Alberta Premier Danielle Smith following the resignation of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday — and Trudeau's suspension (prorogation) of Canadian Parliament while the Liberal Party finds a new leader.
Trudeau's resignation and prorogation come as U.S. President-elect Donald Trump threatens a massive 25% tariff on Canadian goods unless Canada resolves its border security problems.
Canada is also struggling with a massive deficit, runaway national debt, soaring crime, increasing homelessness, a cost of living crisis, immigration issues and faltering national identity — all requiring the attention of MPs in the House of Commons.
"At this critical time, Canadians need and deserve a prime minister and federal government with a clear mandate won from the Canadian people to negotiate with the incoming U.S. president and his administration on one of the most important international negotiations we have ever faced as a country," wrote Smith on X.
The Liberals have no mandate from Canadians, said Smith, who says the party is putting selfish ambitions ahead of Canadians by hobbling Parliament and "suspending democracy" for months while they arrange a leadership contest.
"We call on all federal parties and MPs to force an election at the first available opportunity and give Canadians the opportunity to pick a party and a leader to represent their interests at this critical time for our nation," Smith added.
Smith is known for her opposition to Trudeau's energy policies — like the proposed emissions cap on oil and gas and Ottawa's "No More Pipelines Act."
In a press conference on Monday afternoon, Smith was asked if her fight with Ottawa will wind down, now that Trudeau is transitioning out of office.
"We need an election so that whoever is in the chair has a four year mandate, and so when we go to negotiate with United States, there's some certainty about who the players are going to be at the table," she responded.
