Cameron Davies has gone from backroom strategist to political party leader after accepting the leadership of the Republican Party of Alberta and its nomination for the coming Olds–Didsbury–Three Hills by-election.Party officials confirmed that Davies was acclaimed for the Olds–Didsbury–Three Hills by-election.“I’m honoured to carry the Republican banner into this by-election,” said Davies. “The people of Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills deserve a strong voice who will stand up for our values and push back against the status quo. I’m ready to get to work.”Davies leads a movement that champions Alberta sovereignty and smaller government. .The by-election, expected later this summer, was triggered when longtime United Conservative Party (UCP) MLA Nathan Cooper resigned to become Alberta's Senior Representative to the United States, based in Washington, DC.Davies told reporters he will spend the final weeks before the by-election promoting “grassroots democracy, lower taxes, and common-sense energy policy” while promising to hold Premier Danielle Smith’s UCP accountable. The Republican Party of Alberta emerged from the Buffalo Party earlier this year and has promised a binding referendum on Western independence should it ever form government. Davies carries baggage from his time as a United Conservative staffer and as co-campaign manager for Jeff Callaway’s 2017 leadership bid, an effort that drew $70,000 in fines for violating campaign finance rules. Elections Alberta has not yet set a date for the by-election, but it is expected later this summer.
