An Edmonton man faces multiple charges after being arrested in connection with the sexual assault of a child in Vietnam.Christopher Webber, 55, was arrested on May 15 with assistance from the Edmonton Police Service. He is accused of counselling the sexual offence of a child over a livestream.The arrest follows an extensive investigation by ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit, US Homeland Security Investigations, and Vietnamese authorities. The investigation focused on a video recording of a livestream event posted online, depicting the sexual assault of a child, which occurred sometime between 2021 and 2022.International authorities identified the child, believed to be between two and three years old at the time, and their assailant, both of whom were located in Vietnam..Webber is alleged to have remotely participated in the video, directing the sexual abuse. His identity and location were initially unknown, with US Homeland Security Investigations and BC RCMP’s Internet Child Exploitation unit assisting in his identification."This case is a harrowing reminder of the real-world suffering children endure for some people's sexual gratification," said Acting Sgt. Matthew Pepper, ALERT ICE. "But let this also be a warning to offenders that law enforcement will go to great lengths to identify them, and hold them accountable."Webber has been charged with sexual interference, making arrangements to commit a sexual offence against a child, making child pornography, possession of child pornography, and accessing child pornography.He has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on June 11.
