A 47-year-old Edmonton man who worked as a substitute teacher and college instructor has been arrested and charged with child sexual exploitation offences.Eric Matheson-Jones was arrested on May 14 by members of the Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit, a branch of the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT), with assistance from the Edmonton Police Service.Matheson-Jones faces charges of accessing, possessing, and transmitting child pornography.At the time of his arrest, he was employed as an instructor at NorQuest College and had frequently worked as a substitute teacher for the Edmonton Public and Elk Island Public school divisions. He also tutored in Sherwood Park with a company called Lights On Learning..Investigators say the charges relate to online activity. ICE began its investigation in April after receiving a tip from the RCMP’s National Child Exploitation Crime Centre. It’s alleged that Matheson-Jones uploaded child sexual abuse materials using Dropbox.ICE said there is no information at this time suggesting students were directly affected, but they are releasing details publicly due to the suspect’s position of trust in the education system.The investigation remains ongoing, and officers are continuing a forensic examination of electronic devices seized from the suspect.Matheson-Jones has been released from custody with court-imposed conditions. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 4.
