Alberta Health Minister Adriana LaGrange has selected former Edmonton mayor Stephen Mandel to serve as a public member on the Alberta College of Pharmacy (ACP) Council until Dec. 3, 2027. Mandel will be receiving the remuneration and expenses payable to public members of the ACP Council, according to a Wednesday order in council. Mandel is replacing ACP Council public member Deborah Manz, whose term was supposed to expire on Apr. 6, 2026. LaGrange had the authority to make this move under the Health Professions Act. Mandel had served as Edmonton mayor from 2004 to 2013. His major achievements as Edmonton mayor include expanding the LRT and helping to build the new arena for the Oilers. Despite not holding a seat in the Alberta Legislature, former premier Jim Prentice appointed him as health minister in 2014. While he did obtain a seat in a byelection, he went on to lose it in the 2015 Alberta election. He went on to become Alberta Party leader in 2018, but he opted to resign after it did not win any seats in the 2019 election. Former Service Alberta minister Lloyd Snelgrove established that ACP Council public members will be paid $105 for working up to and including four hours in any day, $175 for more than four hours and up to eight, and $280 for more than eight hours. Meanwhile, Snelgrove said the chair and public members are entitled to be paid travelling and living expenses in accordance with the Subsistence and Travel Allowance Regulation made through a ministerial order as amended or any order made in substitution as if they were Alberta government employees. Snelgrove noted the health minister subject to prior approval of the minister charged with administering the Public Service Act can increase the fees payable under this part up to a maximum of double the appropriate rate determined under Section One or Two.This appointment comes after Alberta Premier Danielle Smith selected former premier Alison Redford to join the Invest Alberta Corporation (IAC) Board of Directors in June. .Smith appoints Redford to Invest Alberta Corporation Board .Redford replaced former IAC Board director Laura Daniels for a term that will expire on Jan. 30, 2027.Smith had the authority to make this appointment under the Alberta Investment Attraction Act.
