Alberta NDP leader Naheed Nenshi said he understands there is an ongoing legal case his party is in with former United Conservative Party candidate Caylan Ford (Calgary-Mountain View) after it had been ordered to pay her legal costs. However, Nenshi said he was not a party to the case. “It would be inappropriate to comment,” said Nenshi at a Tuesday press scrum when asked by the Western Standard. The Court of King’s Bench of Alberta directed the provincial and federal NDP on November 22 to pay Ford $22,680 in costs incurred in the process for her defamation case after she had been portrayed as a white supremacist..Court orders Alberta, federal NDP to pay Caylan Ford $22,680 in costs .Court of King’s Bench of Alberta Justice Corina Dario found a multiplier of two is the minimum number appropriate in these circumstances. “Given the Alberta NDP’s reneging on its agreement before the Applications Judge, the individual Plaintiff has been put to considerable unnecessary delay and expense in resolving this matter,” said Dario. Nenshi followed up by saying it would be inappropriate for him to comment on if he stood by his assertion Ford was right to have resigned as a candidate because she held hateful views. “There’s legal action in place right now, and she’ll have her day in court I’m sure,” he said. Nenshi said in 2019 it was right for Ford to step down, claiming she was unfit to be a politician because she was a white supremacist. “So I’m very happy to have seen that,” he said. “I would have liked to have had a message from the leader of the party condemning those remarks.”
