A report on the city of Medicine Hat’s administration, mayor, and council reveals significant concerns following an inspection ordered by the Government of Alberta.The findings indicate that there have “been multiple actions and decisions that are construed as irregular, improper, and improvident management,” reads the report.Medicine Hat City submitted a formal request to investigate the culture in September 2024. That was when the Minister of Municipal Affairs, Dan Williams, appointed Ian McCormack as the inspector.The inspection report was submitted in April 2025. McCormack submitted it after a thorough investigation, which included interviews and opportunities for feedback, where city officials were given the chance to respond to inaccuracies and comment on the report and proposed actions.The findings were presented Monday at a regular city council meeting..Alberta minister Loewen shares water rescue experience.After reviewing the final report and considering responses from city officials, Williams concluded that formal intervention was necessary, directing the city to take corrective actions to improve governance, transparency, and workplace culture.Williams’ directives include creating an action plan, making the report publicly available online and in print, and providing all council members and senior staff with workplace training. Williams also wants Medicine Hat City Council to send a report by October 1, summarizing its plans to move forward with the recommendations.The action plan, which is included in the report, consists of 86 recommendations — 53 governance-related and 15 administrative.The Western Standard has reached out to Williams’ office for comment.Municipal elections are scheduled to take place on October 20 across Alberta.
