Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is firing back at President-elect Donald Trump who says the U.S. is subsidizing Canadian trade in the order of $100 million per year.

In a social media post, Trump also said Canada should become the 51st state.

"Canada — especially Alberta — sends billions of raw materials – oil, gas, minerals, grain, livestock, and timber to your U.S. refineries and factories which your great American companies and workers upgrade and sell around the world, including back to Canada — we are your biggest customer by a mile," said Smith in a statement posted to social media.

"Literally millions of good paying American jobs and companies rely on these affordable raw materials from Canada to make trillions of dollars of wealth in your country. As a conservative premier in Canada, I believe we have two of the greatest countries on earth."

Not long after Trump's election victory, he threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods until the flow of drugs and migrants from Canada to the U.S. stops. Smith responded by announcing a new Alberta sheriff program to patrol the province's southern border.

"We have fought and bled together in many wars, and built an incredible alliance and partnership. I really hope we can strengthen that partnership throughout your presidency by securing our shared border as you’ve requested and partnering to protect our North American workers from unfair Chinese trade practices," said Smith.

"Americans and Canadians will both benefit immensely from this. We, in the province of Alberta — which sends 4.3 million barrels of oil and gas to your country each day — stand ready to work with you. Looking so forward to attending your inauguration in Washington this January," she added.
