Smith says Alberta Sheriffs could be heading to border with Montana

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith alluded to sending the Alberta Sheriffs to the border with Montana to satisfy US President-Elect Donald Trump. In the last election, Smith promised to establish specialized Alberta Sheriffs units. “And we’ve talked about having a specialized border patrol as well as a fentanyl apprehension team,” said Smith at a Thursday press conference. “And so I would imagine it would work very much the same way that our Fugitive Apprehension Team has.” In this case, the Alberta government would put resources together and work with counterparts to ensure it is seeing any illegal activity happening and apprehend criminals. She said that is what Albertans and Americans expect. Smith followed up by saying there are a few moves that need to happen before the Alberta Sheriffs go to the border. “Number One, yesterday was when the premiers met with the prime minister,” she said. “We all shared our concern about the threats being made about tariffs being applied on January the 20th and expressed our support for doing something to address those very real concerns.” The Alberta government has expressed the same concerns Trump has about the Canada-US border. She said it asked the Canadian government to develop a robust border security plan and would be happy to offer resources to enforce it.
