The Alberta NDP is pumping out nonsense in lieu of much needed self-assessment and retooling. Nagwan Al-Guneid, a member of the NDP shadow ministry for energy and minerals, took to social media on Tuesday blaming Premier Danielle Smith and the UCP for Alberta's affordability problem. Al-Guneid blamed the UCP for high rent, high unemployment and inflation among other things. Fair game — Smith should be scrutinized for the challenges facing Alberta — some of which she enabled, or at least hasn't overcome. However, Al-Guneid, an astute and intelligent politician, has lost the plot.Smith and the UCP did not create the Canada-wide affordability crisis. Federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh in alliance with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau did that. Over the years, Trudeau pumped out billions in inflationary spending — having admitted he thinks little of monetary policy. Prices soared as huge amounts of money entered circulation — Al-Guneid should know that. The national debt skyrocketed under Singh and Trudeau — international competitiveness dropped. The NDP-Liberals routed the economy, making life difficult for millions of families.Backed by the federal NDP, Trudeau hiked the carbon tax, exacerbating inflation and further raising prices across the economy. It is the NDP-Trudeau alliance that flooded the country with millions of immigrants — driving up rent across the country through supply and demand. Immigrants are not to blame. Also, millions of newcomers mean more people looking for work in a finite job market.Smith is not to blame for the affordability crisis. She is to blame for once again making Alberta a beacon of economic hope for Canadians and newcomers. Alberta is a great place to live and work. Because of that, thousands of people from left wing provinces and jurisdictions like B.C. and Toronto are pouring into Alberta every month. Rents go up. Unemployment goes up. Prices increase because more people demand finite services. Pressure on the education and health-care systems increases. The Alberta NDP must chart a new course apart from Singh and Trudeau — hopefully their political days are numbered, anyway. Al-Guneid and her colleagues, not short on brain power or integrity, must present a plan that goes over and above blaming Smith for problems created by their own people. As Alberta thrives — becoming one of the most free and classically Liberal societies on earth — the NDP must aspire to make Alberta even greater. Touting socialism and social justice won't work, regardless of good intentions. Are Al-Guneid and the NDP wrong for challenging Smith? No."Many Albertans are struggling to make ends meet under the highest growing rent, highest unemployment, highest inflation, highest auto insurance, and lowest minimum wages," wrote Al-Guneid in part on X."This government needs to participate in a Team Canada approach that will promote Alberta’s best interests. Albertans deserve a government that focuses on affordability and jobs."
