Wheat growers demand end to EV tariff war as canola threatened

Christopher Oldcorn

Western Wheat Growers (WG) say they are being targeted by Ottawa’s reckless trade policies that pit Eastern Canada against the West.

They argue that tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles are increasing trade tensions and hurting farm communities instead of protecting domestic industries.

“The federal Liberal government’s decision to put tariffs on China has put Western Canadian canola growers in the crosshairs. They have once again pitted Eastern Canada against Western Canada,” said WG President Gunter Jochum.

“We demand that the Canadian government remove the EV tariffs on China and negotiate an immediate end to the tariffs that could shut down the canola industry in Canada.”

Farmers are urging the federal government to defend Canadian agriculture, not sacrifice it in a wider trade war.

They say China’s weaponization of trade threatens competitiveness, productivity, and jobs.

The WG insists Ottawa must stop playing political games with their livelihoods.

They ultimately warn the canola industry cannot be collateral damage in a conflict it did not start.

The WG wants solutions now to secure the future of Canadian farmers and businesses while safeguarding the long-term stability of the canola industry.
