Isabella Krohn is an Alberta resident. She presents a personal story of her struggle with a common condition
Living with eczema since childhood, I’ve faced a lifelong battle with this chronic skin condition.
At 16, I was prescribed steroid creams, which I used consistently for seven years. However, my skin eventually became less responsive to these creams, and they stopped working effectively. Determined to find a natural solution, I embarked on a journey to understand the root cause of my eczema and heal without steroids.
This journey wasn’t easy. Topical steroid withdrawal (TSW), a condition some experience after discontinuing long-term topical steroid use, was a painful and emotionally taxing experience. The symptoms left me feeling helpless, and I often felt like I was walking alone in the dark. But through trial and error, I discovered what worked for me.
Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a complex condition with different triggers for different people. For some, it’s linked to genetic variations affecting the skin’s barrier function. For others, it may involve environmental factors, allergies, or immune system responses. In my case, I believe my eczema was linked to an imbalance in my gut microbiome, though this connection is still being researched.
To cope with TSW and severe eczema flares, I made significant lifestyle changes. I stopped wearing makeup and focused on gentle skincare routines. I experimented with different products and treatments, from soothing bath soaks to nourishing body washes. I also prioritized gut health by incorporating prebiotic and probiotic foods, fermented foods like kimchi and sauerkraut, and sourdough bread into my diet.
One of the most significant breakthroughs came when I did a three-day water fast and cut out foods I identified as inflammatory from my diet. This experience taught me the importance of listening to my body and exploring the potential connection between my gut health and skin health.
I feel fortunate that my response to withdrawal was relatively mild compared to some others who have experienced debilitating pain and itchiness for years. While my experience was still challenging, I’m grateful that I didn’t face the same level of severity that some others have endured.
Living with eczema and TSW can be isolating and humbling. I felt embarrassed and humiliated going out in public, and even simple tasks like bathing or washing my hands became painful. The itch felt like it was in my bones, and I often felt like I was losing control.
If you’re going through a similar experience, I want you to know that you’re not alone. It’s essential to educate yourself on treatment options and take charge of your health. Don’t take your health for granted, and don’t be afraid to seek support from loved ones or healthcare professionals.
My journey has been challenging, but it’s taught me the importance of patience, self-care, and resilience. I’m still learning and growing, but I’m grateful for the progress I’ve made.
If you’re struggling with eczema or TSW, I hope my story can offer some guidance and reassurance. You are not alone, and there is hope for healing.
