Marco Mendicino, a prominent Toronto Member of Parliament and former cabinet minister in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government, announced he would not seek re-election in the next federal election.
Mendicino shared the news in a statement posted on social media, citing his growing disagreement with the government’s approach to key issues, particularly Canada’s stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict.
“It is no secret that I have disagreed with the current direction of the federal government on our foreign policy vis-a-vis our deteriorated relations with the State of Israel, our inadequate handling of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and our enfeebled role in the Middle East,” said Mendicino.
Mendicino served as Minister of Public Safety and Immigration, playing a key role in significant policy initiatives.
His departure adds to the challenges facing Trudeau’s Liberals, who have seen waning support and internal disagreements amid a politically turbulent time.
While Mendicino expressed gratitude for his time in public service, his decision highlights increasing tensions within the Liberal Party over foreign policy.
The Israel-Hamas war has become a particularly divisive issue, with the government facing criticism over its handling of diplomatic responses and humanitarian concerns.
Mendicino’s announcement marks another high-profile exit from Trudeau’s caucus, sparking speculation about the party’s ability to unify before the next election.
