Israel and the terror group Hamas have reached a hostage and ceasefire deal in the Gaza war, which resulted from the massacre of civilians in southern Israel in 2023.
The deal involves a 42-day ceasefire agreement, which includes a detailed hostage and prisoner exchange, brokered by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt.
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has threatened harsh action if Israeli hostages are not released by Hamas.
"All Hell will break out," he said. "It will not be good for Hamas and it will not be good, frankly, for anyone."
Under the terms, Hamas will release 33 hostages, focusing on women, children, men over 50, and those who are infirm or wounded.
The release will occur incrementally over the ceasefire period, with Israel agreeing to free Palestinian prisoners in return, at a ratio of 30 for each civilian hostage.
"Any violation of the ceasefire will be met with a harsh response," Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The ceasefire also mandates a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from key areas in Gaza, allowing for the resumption of humanitarian aid and the return of displaced Palestinians to northern Gaza.
The agreement marks the first phase of what could be a longer-term peace process, with negotiations set to continue for releasing more hostages, including Israeli soldiers.
The deal comes after months of intense negotiations and is seen as a critical step towards de-escalation, though its success will be measured by the adherence to the terms and the progress in subsequent talks.
Trump was quick to take credit.
"This EPIC ceasefire agreement could have only happened as a result of our Historic Victory in November, as it signaled to the entire World that my Administration would seek Peace and negotiate deals to ensure the safety of all Americans, and our Allies," he said on Truth Social.
"I am thrilled American and Israeli hostages will be returning home to be reunited with their families and loved ones."
"With this deal in place, my National Security team, through the efforts of Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, will continue to work closely with Israel and our Allies to make sure Gaza NEVER again becomes a terrorist safe haven."
