An Afghan asylum seeker is accused of driving into a crowd at a Munich protest on Thursday, injuring 28 people, including children, according to German officials.
The incident occurred around 10:30 am local time near the city’s central train station, where a trade union demonstration was underway.
Police shot at the vehicle and arrested the driver, who had prior drug and theft convictions.
Several victims remain in critical condition.
Authorities are investigating the motive but found no direct link to the Munich Security Conference, which begins on Friday.
Bavarian Premier Markus Söder called the attack “shocking,” while Chancellor Olaf Scholz demanded the suspect’s deportation.
The case has reignited debates over Germany’s immigration policies ahead of federal elections.
The driver, who is known to police, no longer poses a threat, officials confirmed.
Investigations continue as global leaders, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance, prepare to attend the security summit.
