Albertans lead Canada in beverage container recycling

Albertans have reclaimed the top spot in Canada for beverage container recycling, returning more than two billion cans, bottles, and other containers in 2024.

This marks an 85% return rate, outpacing the national average of 76% and edging out provincial competitors Saskatchewan (84%) and British Columbia (83%).

The province’s recycling success extends beyond Canada, as Alberta now ranks second in North America, trailing only Oregon.

Unlike Oregon, which recycles only plastic, metal, and glass beverage containers, Alberta’s system includes a broader range of materials, such as juice boxes, bag-in-a-box containers, milk cartons, and pouches.

“Albertans are winners, and these results prove it,” said Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas.

“My call to Albertans is simple: when you are finished with your cans and bottles, recycle. Put money back in your pocket. And keep helping your fellow Albertans beat the competition.”

Industry leaders credit Alberta’s success to its efficient and industry-led recycling system.

Ken White, board chair of the Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation (ABCRC), emphasized that Alberta’s leadership is due to the collaboration of manufacturers, depots, and partners who ensure containers are reintegrated into the circular economy.

The Beverage Container Management Board (BCMB), which oversees the system, also praised the province’s performance.

“This success is a direct result of our shared commitment to continuous improvement and innovation in beverage container recycling,” said board chair Loren Falkenberg.

Bottle depots, with 219 locations across Alberta, play a key role in this achievement.

“Depots are the frontline and backbone of Alberta’s recycling success,” said Kulwant Dhillon, board chair of the Alberta Bottle Depot Association.

“This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of Alberta’s depot operators and the commitment of Albertans to recycling.”

Alberta recycles over 150,000 different types of non-refillable beverage containers, and its return rate is the highest reported in Canada, according to the latest Global Deposit Book.

With Albertans leading the charge, the province continues to set the standard for beverage container recycling nationwide.
