For the sixth year in a row, Olivia and Noah have taken the top spots as Alberta's most popular baby names.
According to the 2024 list of baby names released by the province, Olivia has held the top spot for an impressive 12 consecutive years, while Noah has maintained his position as the most popular boy name for six years.
The list also revealed that Charlotte, Amelia, Sophia, Emma, and Ava were among the top five most popular names for baby girls, while Oliver, Liam, Theodore, and Henry rounded out the top five choices for baby boys.
Minister for Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Dale Nally congratulated the parents of the 2024 babies, saying, "Congratulations to all those who welcomed a child in 2024 and Albertans who took part in the contest to guess the winning names — you continue to make this event my favourite time of year."
The list showcased Albertans' cultural roots and creativity in naming their children. Some parents drew inspiration from nature, choosing names like Cedar, Hope, and Prairie, while others looked to the night sky, selecting names such as Celestial, Cassiopeia, Andromeda, and Orion.
Nally also highlighted the importance of family and community in Alberta, saying, "As we celebrate the new arrivals in 2024, let's also celebrate the families who have chosen to build their futures in Alberta. By prioritizing policies that strengthen families, protect traditional values, and celebrate our shared heritage, we can ensure that Alberta remains the best place to raise a family for generations to come."
In 2024, over 50,000 births were registered in Alberta. Notable changes to the list included the return of Levi and Ethan to the top ten list for boys, and Harper and Sophie to the top ten list for girls. Newcomer Ellie also made her debut in the top ten list for girls.
