All charges have been dropped against Ursula Allred, a young mother and one of the final individuals still facing prosecution over her involvement in the 2022 Coutts Freedom Convoy protest.
The Democracy Fund (TDF), a Canadian civil liberties organization, announced the development following the successful filing of a Jordan Application and extensive legal negotiations.
Allred had faced mischief and related charges stemming from her presence at the border protest site in early 2022, where demonstrators rallied against pandemic-related mandates in defense of civil liberties.
After 37 months of legal proceedings, TDF lawyers secured a stay of proceedings, effectively halting the prosecution. In addition, her cell phone — seized by police in early 2022 — has finally been returned.
“Securing a stay of Ms. Allred’s charges and the return of her phone after 37 months is a significant victory for justice,” said Adam Blake-Gallipeau, TDF’s senior litigation counsel.
“We will continue to vigorously defend the constitutional freedoms of Canadians prosecuted for peaceful protest.”
Allred expressed her relief in a statement shared through TDF: “I am incredibly relieved to have this weight lifted. I’m deeply thankful to The Democracy Fund and their legal team for their tireless work in defending me and protecting my rights.”
TDF has been actively involved in defending more than 30 individuals charged in connection with the Freedom Convoy protests, which drew national and international attention.
The organization remains committed to advocating for Canadians facing legal consequences for exercising rights to free expression and peaceful assembly, as guaranteed by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Founded in 2021, The Democracy Fund is a registered Canadian charity focused on constitutional rights, public education, and access to justice. The organization has spent extensively on litigation efforts supporting individuals affected by pandemic-related government policies.
