Calgary police officer charged with perjury and fabricating evidence

Western Standard News Services

A Calgary Police Service officer has been charged with perjury and fabricating evidence following an investigation by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT).

Joseph Barton was charged on Wednesday, after an ASIRT investigation into evidence he provided during an off-duty legal proceeding.

The case was reviewed by the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service, which determined the evidence met the threshold for prosecution. ASIRT Executive Director Michael Ewenson, KC, then approved the charges.

Barton was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to make his first court appearance in the Alberta Court of Justice in Calgary on March 6.

ASIRT investigates serious incidents involving police in Alberta, including cases of serious injury, death, or significant allegations of misconduct. Officials say no further information will be released as the case is now before the courts.
