Calgary woman charged in slaying of elderly downtown security guard

Western Standard News Services

A 45-year-old woman has been charged with manslaughter following the death of a security guard who was injured during a March altercation at a downtown Calgary building.

Emergency crews were called to the 900 block of 7 Ave. S.W. around 8 a.m. on Thursday, March 13, after staff arriving for work found a security guard in medical distress.

He was transported to hospital in serious condition.

Police say CCTV footage revealed that earlier that morning, a woman had entered the building and attempted to take packages from the lobby.

When the security guard intervened and asked her to leave, the woman allegedly pushed him, causing him to fall backward and strike his head on the ground.

She then reportedly entered the office area, where she is believed to have stolen a laptop and other items.

Officers circulated a photo of the suspect captured on CCTV to District 1 members, and she was located and arrested a short time later.

The victim, identified as George Fernandez, 73, of Calgary, died in hospital the following day. A preliminary autopsy was completed on March 17, with further tests ongoing.

Amanda Robyn Ahenakew has been charged with manslaughter and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, April 16.
