UPDATE: One of the four people taken to hospital following a collision on Macleod Trail in Calgary has succumbed to her injuries.

Three others are in "critical, life-threatening condition."

"The youngest victim of a serious-injury collision that occurred earlier today, a nine-year-old girl, has sadly passed away," CPS wrote in a post on X. "We send our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones impacted by this tragedy."

The original story follows:

The suspect had allegedly robbed a nearby pharmacy before jumping in a stolen vehicle and causing carnage on the busy motorway.

According to the Calgary Police Service, the initial incident took place shortly before 9:30 a.m. at a Pharmasave on 15 Millrise Blvd. SW.

"It is believed the suspect assaulted a pharmacist and fled the scene in a stolen vehicle," the CPS wrote in a press release. "After locating the vehicle, officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver refused to stop and continued driving at high rates of speed."

The ensuing collision took place approximately 18 minutes later after the suspect "ran through a red light at the intersection of Macleod Trail and Southland Drive SE, striking multiple vehicles."

"As a result of the collision, four people were taken to hospital in critical, life-threatening condition," the CPS explained. "The driver was arrested at the scene and remains in custody."

Charges are "pending."

"We fully recognize the devastating impact on the families of the victims, especially during this time of year, and supports have been offered to help them navigate this difficult time," the CPS concluded. "The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been notified due to the earlier police involvement attempting to stop this vehicle. They will review this file to determine if an investigation is required in this case."

Anyone with information has been asked to contact the CPS.
