Governor Gavin Newsom has encouraged Canadians to visit California amid ongoing tensions between the Trump administration and America's neighbours to the north.

He expressed hope that the new campaign would convince Canadians that while the man in the White House may be hostile towards their nation, people 2,000 miles away in the Golden State are awaiting their arrival with open arms.

"The Golden State and Canada have always shared so much in common," Newsom said in a video posted to Twitter/X. "Sure, 'you know who' is trying to stir things up back in DC, but don't let that ruin your beach plans."

He went on to emphasize that California is "2,000 miles from Washington and a world away in mindset."

"From our iconic beaches and national parks, to world class wine, food, and outdoor adventure, there's something here for everyone," Newsom said. "Last year, nearly two million Canadians visited California, because here in California, we've got plenty of sunshine and a whole lot of love for our neighbours up north."

In another clip posted to Twitter/X, Newsom said he reiterated that while "the state of mind in the United States of America has dramatically changed as it relates to the approach to Canada, we wanna make sure we send a message to our Canadian friends up north."

A number of users pointed out, however, that Trump is not the only reason Canadians may be opting not to head south for their vacations. Some cited the weak Canadian dollar and "astronomically expensive" cost of visiting California, while others brought up the state's failure to deal with crime, homelessness, and open drug use.
