Mark Carney’s Liberal “Canada Strong” platform calls for taxpayer money to establish a “new” in-vitro fertilization (IVF) program so that “2SLGBTQI+ Canadians” can obtain children.
“If you want to become a parent, my government will help make it more affordable. We’ll introduce a new IVF funding program to help cover costs for a standard treatment cycle,” wrote Carney on X on Monday.
Carney’s promise to help people have children through IVF is part of the Liberals’ recently introduced “Canada Strong” plan, which pledges to "[e]stablish a new in vitro fertilization (IVF) program that provides up to $20,000 for a single standard cycle of IVF treatment, making it more affordable for Canadians who want to become parents, especially 2SLGBTQI+ Canadians who face a costly journey to parenthood."
The platform also pledges, "We will work with the provinces and territories to make sure more Canadians can access this support."
The platform, which reaffirms a "gender-based analysis," also calls for permanent taxpayer support for the "2SLGBTQI+ Community Capacity Fund to support community organizations and networks that protect rights and advance equality across Canada."
In Canada, the cost of an IVF cycle can range from approximately $7,700 to $12,250, but it can vary depending on the clinic and specific needs. Toronto's Trio Fertility lists fees for various cycles, including fresh IVF ($13,675), freeze all IVF ($15,150), and frozen embryo transfer ($2,750). Additional costs may include medication (ranging from $2,500 to $7,000+), embryo storage, and genetic testing.
Fertility World has an entire web page dedicated to gay surrogacy. Its page on costs in Canada ranges from €145000 to €165000 (CDN $228,000 to $259,000). This package pledges delivery from egg donors in less than one month after the batch is chosen. The process is mainly carried out in Toronto and has an 85% to 95% success rate.
Carney is a Catholic who attends regular Sunday Mass. However, the Catholic Church has officially condemned IVF, declaring it gravely immoral in 1987 in Donum vitae, written by then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and later Pope Benedict XVI. The Catholic Church also strongly condemns abortion, euthanasia, homosexuality, gender ideology, and other practices that Carney promotes.
Pro-life advocates see large ethical problems with IVF. LifeSiteNews has reported that it entails the conscious creation of scores of “excess” embryonic humans only to be killed and human lives being treated like commodities to be bartered over.
When couples or individuals choose to generate children using IVF, typically more eggs are fertilized than necessary as an insurance policy in case first attempts at successful pregnancies fail. Stored embryos deemed to be no longer necessary for the clients’ pursuit of a family are discarded.
It has been estimated that more than a million embryos are frozen in storage in the United States following IVF and that as many as 93% of all embryos conceived through IVF are eventually destroyed.
Canadians will vote on April 28. Carney has been “red-lighted” by social conservative organization Campaign Life Coalition (CLC) for his pro-abortion and pro-euthanasia views, as has Bloc leader Yves-Francois Blanchet.
CLC also red-lit the other party leaders, including Pierre Poilievre for accepting homosexual marriage and his pledge to shoot down any anti-abortion initiatives put forward by private members. CLC similarly deemed Jagmeet Singh "unacceptable" for his support for Bill C-6 in 2021 that would have put parents in jail for up to five years for telling their child to identify with their biological sex. Elizabeth May got a red light for voting in 2021 against a bill to ban sex-selective abortion. Maxime Bernier did not get a rating because he is not a current Member of Parliament.
