A fire broke out early New Year's Eve morning in Telegraph Cove, an eco-tourism hub on the north coast of Vancouver Island.
No injuries were reported, however numerous buildings in the community were destroyed.
"Telegraph Cove Resort became aware of an active structural fire on our property early this morning, December 31, 2024," owners Gordie and Marilyn Graham wrote in a statement on their website. "The resort has been closed for the off-season since October 31, 2024. No guests were on-site at the time of the fire.
They explained that as a result, "there is no access to the property and we kindly request that you do not attempt to enter the property for safety reasons."
"We are cooperating with local authorities and emergency fire services, who have brought the fire under control and will assess the damage and determine the cause," the Grahams added. "We deeply appreciate the efforts of the first responders and the ongoing support of our community during this challenging time. We will share updates on our website as they become available."
Footage of the aftermath captured by local resident Matt Oakheart and posted to Facebook showed the Whale Interpretive Centre, Prince of Whales office, Tide Rip Grizzly Tours office, and Killer Whale Cafe all reduced to ashes.
In the port McNeill Community Events group, many were quick to share their sadness at the destruction of the beloved sites. Others urged people to stay out of the area to ensure clean-up crews could properly attend to the damage.
No cause has been determined.
