A fire tore through a pet cremation and incineration facility in southeast Calgary on Thursday morning, completely destroying the building. No injuries were reported.
The Calgary Fire Department responded to the scene on 11 Ave. S,E. at 9:40 a.m. after multiple 911 callers reported heavy smoke and flames.
Firefighters arrived to find the structure fully engulfed and worked quickly to contain the blaze, bringing it under control by 10:20 a.m.
Due to the lack of nearby fire hydrants, crews used specialized apparatus called Tenders, which carry about four times the amount of water as a standard fire engine.
The fire was contained to the facility, and no damage was reported to neighboring structures. However, a gas line was damaged in the fire, requiring ATCO to assist in shutting it down.
A fire investigator was on scene to determine the cause and origin of the blaze, and a fire watch remains in place.
The Calgary Fire Department thanked those who called 911 to report the fire, emphasizing that fire can double in size every 30 seconds, making quick action crucial.
