More than 5,100 Calgarians register to get Olympic Plaza brick back

The City of Calgary is moving forward with the next steps in its Olympic Plaza Brick Retrieval Program, following the closure of the registration period.

The program invited original purchasers of the 1988 inscribed bricks to reclaim them ahead of the site’s upcoming transformation project.

Over the registration period, 5,105 applications were submitted by Calgarians wishing to retrieve their commemorative bricks. The deadline to register passed on December 18, and no further applications will be accepted.

Those who applied by the deadline have been notified via email that their applications have been received.

City crews are now carefully removing the bricks from Olympic Plaza, a process expected to continue over the next two weeks. However, due to the age of the bricks — many of which are over 40 years old — along with prior damage and construction materials used, not all bricks may be recoverable.

Applicants will receive a second email by January 3, confirming whether their requested brick was successfully retrieved. For those whose bricks remain intact, details will be provided about in-person pick-up scheduled for January 3-4.
