A new poll conducted by J&L Partners on behalf of the Daily Mail has revealed that Canadians would rather rejoin the British Empire than become part of the United States.
The results come amid increased tensions between Canada and those in charge of its neighbour to the south.
According to the poll, if "forced to choose," 82% of Canadians would rejoin the British Empire. On the other hand, just 18% said they would rather become the 51st state.
When asked who they would prefer as their head of state, 54% said King Charles III, while only 15% expressed a desire to see President Donald Trump take the country's top spot.
At 31%, Conservative voters were far more likely than their Liberal or NDP-supporting countrymen to prefer Trump to King Charles III. Of those who fell into the latter two categories, Trump was only favoured by 4% and 8%, respectively.
Conservatives were also more inclined to reject the idea of rejoining the British Empire and become a part of the US. Nearly one-third, 32%, said they would rather at a fifty first star to the American flag. Only 4% of Liberals and 10% of NDP supporters said the same.
Canada was originally a major part of the British Empire, but that arrangement lost steam with the British North America Act of 1867 and was eventually rendered void via the 1982 Canada Act.
