A day after saying the hit-and-run deaths of two dogs in Southern Alberta was intentional, RCMP have walked back and now say it was just an accident.
Oyen RCMP said in a Monday release they were investigating a disturbing hit-and-run collision that killed two dogs in Bindloss on Sunday.
RCMP said at approximately 10:00 a.m., a white sedan traveling westbound on Railway Ave. was seen accelerating and swerving off the road, deliberately striking two Great Pyrenees dogs.
Both dogs were killed, and the vehicle fled the scene, continuing westbound. Witnesses reported that the front end of the sedan sustained significant damage during the collision.
Oyen RCMP appealed to the public for help in identifying the vehicle and its occupants.
On Tuesday, the RCMP said it was all just an accident.
"The Oyen RCMP advise that the suspect in the Oyen RCMP’s hit and run investigation in Bindloss has reported to the detachment," the force said in a release.
"After continued interviews and investigation, this collision is not believed to have been intentional. Attempts were made by the young driver with their family to locate the owner following the collision."
Bindloss is 100 km north of Medicine Hat.
