Trudeau to host Canada-US economic summit with Canadian leaders

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday morning announced a Canada-US Economic Summit to be held this Friday in Toronto.

The summit will be hosted by the members of the Council on Canada-US Relations, with Canadian leaders representing various sectors in attendance.

There was no mention of any representatives from the US being in attendance.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in a news release acknowledged the 30-day pause on 25% tariffs on all Canadian goods proposed by President Donald Trump is just a brief reprieve from what would be a staggering economic blow.

Trudeau intends to use this month to build a “resilient,” “long-term prosperity agenda for Canada” that “breaks down barriers between provinces and territories, and that is diversified in global trade.”

The Economic Summit will operate under the framework of the council and the government hopes it will “bring together Canadian leaders in trade, business, public policy, and organized labour.”

The business leaders will “explore ways to grow Canada’s economy, make it easier to build and trade within the country, diversify export markets, and rejuvenate productivity,” said the PMO.

Trudeau said the summit is going to be “Team Canada at its best.”

“We are bringing together partners across business, civil society, and organized labour to find ways to galvanize our economy, create more jobs and bigger paychecks, make it easier to build and trade within our borders, and diversify export markets. We want businesses, investors, and workers to choose Canada.”
