Dramatic dashcam video has been released by a Calgary judge showing a shootout between a RCMP officer in Canmore and the suspect he was pursuing in 2023.
The video was released Wednesday by Court of King's Bench Justice Keith Yamauch in the case against Canmore resident Austin Desylva.
The video shows Desylva fleeing a traffic stop on Feb. 24, and shooting at Const. Reyno La Cock of the Banff RCMP.
After a two-minute pursuit in which Desylva fired at the officer with a 3D-printed, Glock-style handgun, he was eventually cornered in a cul-de-sac.
La Cock fired a total of 25 shots at Desylva who eventually fled into the woods.
"No one has ever shot at me before," testified La Cock, according to the CBC.
"This suspect has shown that he has shot at me, he's used deadly force … now he can run at me with his vehicle as well."
Desylva was eventually tracked down suffering from frostbite . He was shot in the face and neck and was suffering from a shattered jaw.
In the vehicle, police recovered three cellphones used for drug trafficking purposes as well as 40 grams of cocaine, a weight scale and $1,800 in cash.
Desylva, 28-year-old pleaded guilty to four charges, including firearms and drug offences. A charge of attempted murder was withdrawn.
His sentencing hearing continues.
