Choruses of boos rang out during the singing of the Star Spangled Banner prior to the Canucks' opening face-off against the Detroit Red Wings at Rogers Arena on Sunday.

Vancouver fans have become the latest to boo the United States' national anthem ahead of their side's matchup with an American team as tensions between the two countries rise due to tariffs imposed on Canada by President Donald Trump.

Footage shows fans booing for the duration of the anthem, becoming noticeably louder at the end as the singer sang, "land of the free and the home of the brave."

Just moments later, the negative energy was replace by positive, powerful patriotism as fans proudly belted out O' Canada.

Over the past couple years, it has become a trend for fans to emphasize the word "free" when singing the anthem in Canadian arenas, however on Sunday it was taken to the next level, as that lyric was followed by raucous cheers.

Commentators John Shorthouse and Dave Tomlinson did not shy away from referencing the ongoing tariff war during their play-by-play of the game.

"This will actually be a two-and-a-half minute power play for the Detroit Red Wings due to the 25% tariff that is being imposed on penalties to Canadian-based teams," Shorty joked when the Canucks were penalized.

Fans in Ottawa were the first to boo ahead of their Saturday night matchup against the Minnesota Wild. The game took place just hours after Trump officially declared the introduction of the tariffs.

It wasn't just hockey fans who chose booing to express their disapproval of Trump's move. Those in attendance at the Raptors' game in Toronto on Sunday did the same. They, too, went on to belt out the Canadian national anthem right after.
