WATCH: Moe says ‘Liberal takeover of the NDP is virtually complete’

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, the day after Mark Carney’s Liberals secured a minority government in the federal election, remarked the Liberals have officially eclipsed the NDP.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Moe told reporters he is hoping Carney and the new Liberal government will “engage” on topics central to Western issues, and “show goodwill” by starting to “heal some of the divisions that we see across the nation.”

“We're prepared to give them an opportunity to start,” he said.

“And you know, what we saw last night was officially the takeover of the NDP party by the Liberals,” added Moe.

He said Saskatchewan, since 1935, has seen the NDP poll above about 20%, but they only received about 7% in the vote the night before.

“So the takeover of the NDP party by the Liberals across Canada is virtually complete,” said Moe, remarking that this has essentially been the case since the two parties signed their Supply and Confidence Agreement in 2021, which resulted in a coalition government.

“Canadians have voted on where that is going, and so that takeover is virtually complete,” said Moe.

He further observed Canada is now “entering a two-party system,” much like the one south of the border in the US.

“And so the prime minister has some work (to do),” continued Moe.

“What we're saying and what we're offering is we will be part of that work, and we will do what we can to provide you with some guidance from our perspective on how we can hopefully heal some of those divisions.”
