U.S. President Donald Trump isn't taking prisoners when it comes to defiance of recently signed executive orders.
On Friday at the White House, he eviscerated Maine Gov. Janet Mills during a meeting of governors held in the State Dining Room.
The spat occurred as Trump spoke of his executive order banning transgender athletes — biological men — from competing in girls’ and women's sports, threatening to withhold federal funding from states that don't tow the line.
Trump singled out Mills, a Democrat, asking, “Are you not going to comply with it?”
Mills responded, “I’m complying with state and federal laws.”
Unfazed, Trump retorted, “You better do it—because you’re not going to get any federal funding at all if you don’t,” adding that Maine’s population “doesn’t want men playing in women’s sports.”
Mills fired back, “We’re going to follow the law, sir. We’ll see you in court,” prompting Trump to predict the end of her political career, saying "Good, see you in court. I look forward to that. That should be a real easy one. Enjoy your life after governor because I don't think you'll be in elected politics."
According to a New York Times — Ipsos poll conducted from January 2 to January 11, 79% of Americans surveyed believe transgender female athletes— biological men — should not be allowed to compete in women’s sports.
Trump signed an executive order, "Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports" on February 5.
